One of the most common questions we receive from our subscribers is about what metric should be used when entering parts and inventory data on Otimize Nesting. Millimeters, inches or what?
This question is natural since most of CAD/CAM software solutions present today require this information. A measuring metric is necessary to assist in the product lifecycle management (PLM) and also in the motion control programming or CNC.
Width and length are the only geometric information necessary to generate rectangular nesting plans, cutting plans, cutting lists, etc.
If you are a cabinet maker, woodworker, carpenter, sheet metal worker, etc, you probably had to manually input several information on the PC. This is an exhaustive and error prone task.
On Otimize Nesting, we decided to make things easier, so we abstracted that information. We think that inputting values without decimal separators and not having to request a metric configuration would be a very productive, time saving feature. In addition, typing errors will be certainly minimized.
No matter what measuring metric you use (centimeters, millimeters, inches, mils or even feet) you will be able to create a correct nesting plan. Just choose a metric in your mind and enter all data using that metric only!
